Robert Browning (1812-1889) escrevia uma poesia vitoriana difícil e pesada, cheia de versos cortados em enjambements e sentenças longuíssimas. Browning teve uma grande sacada que usou nos seus melhores poemas: inventar personagens complexos [geralmente figuras históricas mais ou menos obscuras] e escrever então monólogos dramáticos, nos quais esses personagens/vozes poéticas vão se revelando ao leitor aos poucos. Nesse "My Last Duchess" o leitor em atirado en media res [em plena ação] quando o Duque de Ferrara recebe um emissário da família da sua noiva, a "next duchess" e exibe um retrato pintado da falecida duquesa, a do título, que ele mantém coberto com uma cortina que só ele pode abrir. Segue um estudo do orgulho, dos ciúmes e da prepotência doentios do tal duque, uma figura meio “barba azul”.

1 That's my last Duchess painted on the wall,
2 Looking as if she were alive. I call
3 That piece a wonder, now: Frà Pandolf's hands
4 Worked busily a day, and there she stands.
